Like Shonen, Shoujo is a genre of anime geared towards a specific demographic, but unlike shonen appealing to young boys, shoujo is meant for young girls. Typically the majority of characters are female with plots surrounding drama, magic, science fiction, and several others.

Shoujo manga has a long history, and is one of the first to feature the iconic ‘wide-eyed’ characters. Here’s a blip from wikipedia: aimed at a young teen female targetdemographic readership. The name romanizes the Japanese 少女 (shōjo), literally “young woman” in English. Shōjo manga covers many subjects in a variety of narrative styles, from historical drama to science fiction, often with a focus on romantic relationships or emotions….Manga and anime labeled as shōjo need not only interest girls; some titles gain a following outside the traditional audience.
